This year marks the 75th anniversary of the first green building to open in the U.S.
The Green Building Council, a nonprofit group that represents the building industry, announced Thursday that it would present the first Green Building Awards to the new building at 10,000 S. Florida Ave., near the University of Miami campus.
The organization says the award will be presented to the building’s architect, architect and principal contractor.
It will recognize the design of the building with its environmental impact statement, design performance, environmental design, and the development of the green space, which is “an opportunity to celebrate a project that is more than a building, it’s a place where we can learn from one another and share our stories.”
The award will also recognize the building for its innovative design, its innovative use of natural materials and its contribution to the neighborhood’s environment.
The group said the award was “dedicated to the legacy of the Green Building Program.”
The Green building program, which provides funding for affordable housing, is a federally funded program that has been a catalyst for the development and preservation of green spaces.
